The announcer stood up on the podium, ready to make the announcement of who was picked in the reaping for District 2. As the announcer silenced the crowd, with all the parents watching, knowing that he was sending their children into certain death. Unless they beat the odds.
"Attention" his voice boomed out. He knew that Careers would most likely step up and take spots, but then there was also times that they wouldn't and they'd let little pests get taken care of.
"The two Tributes will have to step up here, Holly Winters and Dexter Jones" he said as he saw an older teenager walk up towards him. Then the girl made her way up towards him.
"Anyone willing to take either of their spots?" he said as both tributes had finally made it to the platform.

Dexter felt a scilent scream inside him as he walked up the podium. Was his life really going to be cut short like this? He could faintly hear his father whisper 'No' and fall to his knees in the middle of the crowd with a sob. Everything was muted after his name was called, nothing mattered, unless another boy was willing to risk his life for a doctor's son. Dex turned and scanned the crowd, watching the faces of his friends fall as they realised it was their Dexter that had been chosen. However, it seemed that no one was going to take his spot... Oh how he knew he should have trained more. His hands balled into fists in his pockets. He shouldn't have taken out that extra Tessere, Stupid stupid stupid boy! His father... Dexter scanned the crowd and saw where his father was being sedated before he went into any fits. His eyes were dry even when he wanted to fall to his knees as well and cry like a child. He knew, however, that thi was not teh time for tears. Dexter turned to watch the girl climb the platform and sighed.

Holly rocked back and forth in the crowd. These things never seemed real to her. Once before, two or three years ago a friend of a friend had been reaped that that was as close as the games had ever gotten to her. She ran her hand through her hair and silently waited for some one around her to be delivered to death. Thats when she heard her name. It was like all the air had been sucked out of her lungs. Around her she felt all the girls give a sigh of relief that it haden't been their name that was called. This momentary calm was followed shortly by the gasps and choked cries of her friends who knew and loved her. Holly stepped out of the crowed, people respectfully stood aside and let her pass. She gave reassuring smiles to her friends but she couldn't bear to look at her mother or father. She took the stage and waved to the crowd, she tried to smile to them but all she could think was that her life had been taken from her to soon. She wasn't ready to die, not yet...
She glanced at the boy standing beside her and felt pity for him. She felt pity for them both. She looked back over the crowed, her eyes now rimmed with tears and she couldn't help but see her mother. With a sad smile she thought to herself. Don't worry mom, i'm coming home.
